Gummy Smiles Mackay
Do You Show Too Much Gum When You Smile?
In a perfect smile, your upper lip should sit just above the top of your teeth. However, some people show an excessive amount of gums when they smile. This is known as a gummy smile. Approximately 7% of men and 14% of women show too much of their gums when they smile. A gummy smile is usually associated with an enlarged upper jaw, a short upper lip, short upper front teeth, or a forward position of the front teeth. This condition may also result from disproportionate lip length or tooth height.
Treatment for gummy smiles
Smiles 4 Everyone in Mackay offer our patients treatment for gummy smiles. A gummy smile can be corrected by gum contouring, crown lengthening, orthodontic treatment, periodontal surgery, jaw surgery, or a combination of these procedures.
Using a diode laser, your Smiles 4 Everyone dentist can accurately sculpt your gum line, crafting the right fraction between gum tissue and tooth surface. First, one our friendly dentists will apply a local anaesthetic to the gums and remove the extra gum tissue. Then, they will use the laser to reshape the edges of your gums that form a smile. The laser vaporises and closes the excess gum tissue, avoiding cutting and bleeding.
As one of the gummy smile treatments on offer at our Mackay practice, crown lengthening consists of gum tissue removal. While you are under anaesthesia, your cosmetic dentist eliminates some of the gum tissue. This removal lengthens your teeth and can usually be carried out in just one appointment. Crown lengthening usually only requires about two hours to complete.
In general, active treatment time with orthodontic appliances range from one to three years. The actual time depends on the growth of the patient’s mouth and face, the co-operation of the patient, and the severity of the problem. Custom-made appliances are designed by the orthodontist according to the problem being treated. They may be removable or fixed (cemented and/or bonded to the teeth), and made of metal, ceramic or plastic. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces can slowly move teeth through their supporting bone to a new desirable position.
