Obstructive Sleep Apnoea in Children Mackay
Children’s sleep issues
According to the Australasian Sleep Association approximately 3% of children in Australia suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Essentially, it’s not normal for children to snore. Snoring is generally a result of muscles around the airway relaxing which causes the throat and upper airway to narrow. The pre-school years are the peak age affected by sleep apnoea. The problems OSA can cause children are:
- Poor concentration
- Difficulty learning
- Cardiovascular health
Signs and symptoms to look for are:
- Regular snoring
- Noisy breathing during sleep
- Pauses in breathing during sleep
- Restless sleep
- Increased sweating during sleep
The most common cause of snoring is large tonsils blocking the airways. The Smiles 4 Everyone team will work with an ear nose and throat doctor to treat your child and to attempt to eliminate snoring.
Not all dentists can diagnose let alone treat snoring and sleep apnoea. At Smiles 4 Everyone in Sarina, near Mackay we can assess your child’s facial profile, jaw joints and sleep quality to determine if your child does or doesn’t have sleep apnoea.
