Teenage and adult teeth straightening
Teeth straightening treatment is used to correct a “bad bite.” This condition, known as a malocclusion, involves teeth that are crowded or crooked. In some cases, the upper and lower jaws may not meet properly and although the teeth may appear straight, the individual may have an uneven bite.
Protruding, crowded or irregularly spaced teeth and jaw problems may be inherited. Thumb-sucking, losing teeth prematurely and accidents can also lead to these conditions.
Correcting the problem can create a nice looking smile, but more importantly, orthodontic treatment results in a healthier mouth. Crooked and crowded teeth make cleaning the mouth difficult, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and—in extreme cases—tooth loss. An improper bite can interfere with chewing and speaking, can cause abnormal wear to tooth enamel, and can lead to problems with the jaws.
We offer traditional metal braces as well as Invisalign. Treatment with traditional metal braces can take one to three years depending on the severity of your condition. It is necessary when wearing braces to be mindful of what you can and cannot eat. For the first few weeks your teeth will be getting used to the braces: during this time we recommend eating soft foods, like soups and stews until your mouth gets used to the braces. You will also need to avoid hard and crunchy foods so that you don’t damage your braces or teeth.
Invisalign is a lifestyle friendly orthodontic option which does not involve braces. It is a series of clear aligners that gradually move your teeth into the desired position. They are removable and virtually invisible so you can remove them when you eat, drink or have an important function to attend.
Early childhood teeth straightening
Crooked teeth and other orthodontic problems usually start young and are mostly due to incorrect muscle function. These issues include finger sucking habits, mouth breathing and poor swallow patterns.
Our Sarina dental practice, near Mackay offers early intervention teeth straightening services for children. These appliances will only work for children who are seriously compliant. Wearing appliances for 1-3 hours per day and every night is mandatory. The appliance is known as a myobrace and is more like a mouthguard than braces. For it to work your child must learn how to swallow correctly (with their lips together) and position the tongue in the right place in the mouth.
