What are dental implants?
Let’s start with the basics, what are dental implants? Well dental implants are essentially replacement teeth that support the functionality of your smile. Dental implants can simply be for one singular tooth, or a number of teeth, and can be removable or fixed to the jaw.
The surgical process of placing dental implants consists of four major stages. The first stage consists of an initial consultation in which Dr Kelvin assesses your oral health, ensuring you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. The second stage consists of surgically placing the implant into the gum. The third stage, which is generally conducted some time (a few months) after the initial surgery to allow for healing and jaw integration, consists of connecting an abutment to the initial implant. In the final stage a prosthetic implant is connected to the abutment. Due to the complexity of this surgery, it is likely that the procedure will be completed over a number of months, rather than in one singular session.
What are the advantages of dental implants?
There are a number of advantages associated with dental implants. These include improvements in:
- Oral health
Not only that, but dental implants are durable and built to last, acting as a regular tooth that assists in breaking down substances in the mouth.
Although dental implants can be quite advantageous, they do pose some potential disadvantages, albeit very few, these may include:
- Excessive bleeding (post operation)
- Failure to integrate with jaw
- Screw or abutment loosening/fracturing
These are of course precautionary concerns that will be mentioned prior to surgery to ensure each patient understands the risks of dental implant surgery. Although the listed disadvantages might be of some concern to those wishing to receive dental implants, it is worthy of mentioning that the success rate of dental implant surgery is above 90% with long term success rates continually improving.
What are All-on-4 dentals implants?
The All-on-4 treatment concept is a surgical procedure in which patients receive a permanent, screw retained replacement for the entire upper or lower set of teeth. This form of surgery is specifically for those who have suffered tooth loss, tooth decay or bone loss in the jaw area which prevents them from getting dental implants. This treatment concept consists of applying a dental prosthesis with at least twelve teeth which is then fixed to the jaw on four titanium implants, thus the name, All-on-4.
